Try this fixed upgrade and fixed full install. Found the problem based on your member reporting. I don't know why it did not effect me. I install or upgrade before I share on forum and everything worked as expected.

Log into your website over FTP and locate the "/temporary/package/archives/" directory in your SocialEngine path. Upload the tar files to this directory, and set the permissions of the file to 777. Then, proceed to the Manage > Packages & Plugins page. SocialEngine should be able to detect the file and extract its contents, allowing you to proceed with the rest of the installation.

now the installation was successful

Maybe there's a nulling problem?
I'm getting this error with some plugins.

Zend_Http_Client_Exception: Error in cURL request: Could not resolve host: services.socialengine.com in /var/www/html/application/libraries/Zend/Http/Client/Adapter/Curl.php:455

Do you have cURL installed and running?

Is this the fresh install or upgrade?
